Frequently Asked Questions

Mission Goals:

  • What will we be doing for work projects? We are helping prepare the local leaders to provide places where kids can come and hear the gospel proclamation in an environment safe for them; we may paint a local salon, do basic maintenance in an area with ministry or target ministry, help with contact work… when we are in the city communities we will be alongside Young Life leaders, staff and teenagers, and their families
  • What will the kids be doing? We will include kids (ideally age 9 and above*) and our service will be together as a group in the communities, also interacting with local Costa Ricans in club and activities.  *Exceptions on our age request can be made by discussing with our trip leaders.

Payment + Travel Misc:

  • What is the deposit?  A deposit of $250 per traveler can be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.  Online option: just select the "Costa Rica" fund and enter the amount; select "give once"; then "Continue".
  • When do I have to pay the balance? By June 15, 2024.  Payments can be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.  Participants can submit a check or pay online here.  Just select the "Costa Rica" fund and enter the amount to proceed.
  • What's the weather like? In June it is generally sunny in the mornings, with a chance of afternoon rain. Temperatures are mild and get cooler in the evenings, aka "sweatshirt weather".
  • What is appropriate dress?  Can I wear shorts/dresses above the knee?  Can I wear tank tops/sleeveless dress? We suggest long shorts and pants, short sleeve t-shirts or tank tops
  • Where will we be exactly?  Our city is located approximately an hour from the San Jose airport. We will stay at "El Chante", a house+retreat center for mission groups connected with YoungLife.  [map]
  • How will I get from the airport to where I need to go?  Our team will handle all your transport upon your arrival until your trip departure.
  • Do I need any immunizations before traveling?  None that we require, but do check with your healthcare provider

Safety + Accommodations:

  • What are the sleeping arrangements? We are working on these details but will be aiming for rooms that accommodate families and individuals.
  • Can I drink the water? We will have purified water for all participants
  • Can you accommodate my dietary needs? Most likely! Please let us know ahead of time

Exploring + Spending Money:

  • Where else will we go?  Our travel plans include an "adventure day" either in the rainforest or along the coast. This cost is included in your on-ground cost.
  • Will I get a chance to purchase any local souvenirs/go to a market? Yes - very likely on "Adventure Day".
  • How much personal spending money do I need? Credit cards are accepted in larger stores. ATM is available at the luggage section of SJO airport. Personal spending cash amount is a personal decision but we will discuss at team meetings. Also, it's best to have bill denominations of $20 and less. Be aware of whether your card charges international fees.
